Best Practices: A Sampling

City Lore's approach and methods are tested in schools like PS 11 and PS 84 in Queens, and PS 29 in Brooklyn. We design, implement and evaluate artist residencies, performances, staff development and parent workshops, and we assist in materials selection. Our programs are designed to support national and New York State learning standards and best practices in teaching. City Lore residencies provide hands-on arts experiences that are student-centered, experiential, inquiry-based, collaborative, and developmentally appropriate.

Sample Visual Arts Residency: Chinese Lanterns and Me (visual art)

Sample Teaching Artist Workshop: "Artist Statements
"
One of our teaching artists, playwright John Kallas, always asked his students to write an artist statement for their production's program book. It was such a wonderful tool that we now use artist statements in all our residencies. Learn about this creative student assessment and writing tool and contribute your own ideas!

Sample Parent Workshop: "Exploring Your Neighborhood"
City Lore staff offers parent and family workshops in which parents, children, and teachers share family and personal experience stories and learn skills for documenting family and community traditions.
